Meet the Director - Bob Harris

Bob originally trained as a Medical Microbiologist at St George's Hospital Medical School in London and later studied Herbal Medicine with the College of Phytotherapy. To further his educational skills, he qualified in the writing, editing and administration of distance education courses with the Association of European Correspondence Schools.

For the past 20 years, Bob has been involved in proving the efficacy of essential oils by providing a solid foundation in scientific research. As well as being the compiler, editor and publisher of the unique Essential Oil Bioactivity Research Database, he has also written for numerous journals and provided scientific content for Advanced Clinical Aromatherapy courses. He recently wrote the chapter entitled Phytotherapeutic Uses of Essential Oils in the 'Handbook of Essential Oils. Science, Technology and Applications'.

In 2000 Bob took over from Robert Tisserand as the editor of the International Journal of Aromatherapy (Elsevier Science) and later became the editor and publisher of the International Journal of Essential Oil Therapeutics and publisher of the International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy. During this period Bob was co-Director of Essential Oil Resource Consultants. He is the Scientific Advisor for InEssence, the journal of the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists.

Bob travels widely for consultancy work involving distillation, quality control, essential oil product design and identifying potential commercial markets for essential oils. He has been involved with in vivo pilot studies and clinical trials of essential oils in Belgium, Egypt, Germany, Kenya, Madagascar and Mexico. The latter involved supervision of the trial in a hospital environment and the creation of comprehensive Investigational Medicinal Product Dossiers for submission to the FDA. Bob has assisted in the writing of patents for essential oil blends and has successfully defended such patents from objections by the patent examiners.

Now based in the south of England, Bob continues his consultancy work whilst updating the Research Database and writing distance courses and a book about the bioactivity of essential oils.
